European I-Beam and H-Beam Sections (IPE, HEA, HEB)

Dimensions, area, mass, second moments and section moduli of IPE, HEA and HEB rolled beams.

IPE, HEA and HEB are the standard European rolled I-beams and H-beams. IPE beams are deep and narrow, the efficient choice for bending; HEA and HEB are wide-flange (H) sections that suit columns and wide-span beams. The name is the series and the approximate depth: IPE 200 is about 200 mm deep.

This table gives the dimensions of 40 sections and the section properties used in design: area, mass per meter, the second moment of area (I), the elastic section modulus (W) and the radius of gyration (i), for both the strong axis (x) and the weak axis (y). The properties are computed from the dimensions, including the root fillets.

Source and notes: Nominal dimensions of IPE (EN 10365), HE A and HE B (EN 10365, EN 10034) sections. Area, mass (7 850 kg/m3), second moments, section moduli (elastic) and radii of gyration are computed here from the dimensions, including the root fillets; the results agree with the maker's tables to within rounding (for example IPE 200: 28.5 cm2, 22.4 kg/m, 1 943 cm4). Use the maker's data for design.

How to use this table

  1. Find the section (type the series, such as “IPE”, in the filter box).
  2. For bending, divide the bending moment by the section modulus Wx to get the stress. For deflection use the second moment Ix.
  3. For a column, use the radius of gyration i to get the slenderness (length ÷ i).
  4. Compare the mass per meter: the lightest section that meets the strength and stiffness needs is usually the most economical.

Worked example: a 4 m simply supported beam carrying 10 kN/m

  • Maximum bending moment M = wL² ÷ 8 = 10 × 4² ÷ 8 = 20.0 kN·m.
  • With an allowable stress of 160 MPa the section modulus must be at least 20.0 × 10⁶ ÷ 160 = 125 cm³.
  • The lightest IPE that meets it is IPE 180 (Wx = 146 cm³, 18.8 kg/m).
  • Deflection = 5wL⁴ ÷ (384 E I) = 5 × 10 × 4 000⁴ ÷ (384 × 210 000 × 13 170 000) = 12.1 mm, which is L/332.

Notes and cautions

  • The strong-axis properties apply when the load acts in the plane of the web. Check the weak axis and lateral-torsional buckling for beams that are not braced against sideways movement.
  • The section moduli here are elastic. The plastic modulus is about 12 to 15 percent higher for IPE beams and is used in plastic and Eurocode design.
  • Mass is for steel at 7 850 kg/m³. Rolling tolerances change the real mass by a few percent.

FAQ

What is the difference between IPE, HEA and HEB?

IPE beams have narrow flanges for their depth and are the lightest for bending. HEA, HEB (and the heavier HEM) have flanges as wide as the section is deep: HEA is the lightest of the three, HEB the standard, HEM the heaviest.

What does the number mean?

It is the nominal depth in millimeters. The real depth can differ: HEA 200 is 190 mm deep and HEB 200 is 200 mm deep.

What are the US equivalents?

The American wide-flange (W) shapes, such as W8×31, are close to the HE series. They have different dimensions, so use the AISC tables for W shapes.
