Resources & Learning

Guides, formulas, and references for automation, mechanical design, programming, and the shop.

About this library

Resources & Learning is the reading side of Engineer Underground: guides that explain how things work, give you the formulas, and work a real example from start to finish. Each topic is a guide made of an overview and a set of detail pages, so you can start with the big picture or go straight to the part you need. There are more than 350 guide pages so far.

The guides are grouped into six areas. Automation covers PLCs, motion control, sensors, industrial networks, robots and control systems. Mechanical covers gears, strength of materials, fits and tolerances, GD&T, materials and machine design. Thermal and Fluids covers pipe flow, pumps, heat transfer, thermodynamics, HVAC and hydraulics. Programming covers embedded systems, languages, data logging, machine learning and robot software. Electronics covers circuits, analog and digital design, power electronics and PCB design. Makers & Fabrication covers 3D printing, CNC, laser cutting, soldering, workshop tools and safety, and prototyping.

Every guide links to the calculators that go with it, and each calculator links back to the theory. Values that depend on a supplier, grade or region are labeled “typical”, and pages list their sources. Read how we write and check our pages, and tell us what to add next with the Suggest a Topic form.
