Steel Bar Weight per Meter
Weight per meter of round, square and hexagon steel bar and round aluminum bar, from 5 to 100 mm.
The weight of a bar is its cross-section area times its density. This table does the arithmetic for the sizes in the stockroom: round, square and hexagon steel bar (the hexagon size is the distance across the flats), and round aluminum bar for comparison, from 5 to 100 mm.

Source and notes: Computed from the cross-section area and a density of 7 850 kg/m3 for steel and 2 700 kg/m3 for aluminum (round bar: pi/4 d2; square: d2; hexagon: (sqrt(3)/2) s2 with s across flats). 1 kg/m = 0.671969 lb/ft. Rolled bar is within about 2 to 3 percent of these figures.
How to use this table
- Find the diameter or across-flats size.
- Read the weight per meter and multiply by the length to estimate the weight of a piece.
- Multiply by the price per kilogram for a quick material cost.
Worked example: a 3 m length of 25 mm bar
- Round steel: 3.853 kg/m × 3 m = 11.56 kg.
- Square steel of the same size weighs 14.72 kg (27 percent more, because the area is bigger).
- Round aluminum: 3.98 kg, about 34 percent of the steel.
Notes and cautions
- Steel is taken as 7 850 kg/m³ (carbon steel); stainless steel is about 2 percent heavier and aluminum about a third of the weight.
- Commercial bar is made to tolerances, so the actual weight is within about ±3 percent of the figure here.
- For plate, flat bar and other shapes use the steel and plate weight calculator.

FAQ
How do I find the weight of a round bar?
Area × length × density: π ÷ 4 × d² × L × 7 850 kg/m³. For a 10 mm bar that is 0.617 kg/m.
What is the weight of 1 inch round steel bar?
About 4.30 kg/m (2.67 lb/ft) for a 25.4 mm bar.
